Start with why

I’ve recently started reading Simon Sinek’s “Start With Why” book, and I’m enjoying it. So, it seems fitting as I have just begun my new role as Mobilization Manager with Rescue America, to share a bit of WHY I am here, doing this work today.

When I was in 5th grade, I read a book about Abraham Lincoln and I became so inspired by his efforts to free the slaves; I cried at the end when he died! Little did I know that in my heart, a Kingdom-seed was planted. Years later, I became impassioned learning about Martin Luther King, Jr and his non-violent approach to bring equality to people of color and to fight injustice. That Kingdom-seed was watered. When I led a special needs’ ministry, my team and I visited a conference in Washington, DC and I had an opportunity to visit the Lincoln Memorial. This may sound silly, but I never realized that Martin Luther King was standing there, when he gave the “I have a dream” speech. I stood on the marker, where MLK spoke, with the towering statue of Lincoln behind me and wept. Deep in my bones, a seed was sprouting.

Like MLK, I too have a dream. I have a dream that women will not be treated and branded like cattle. I have a dream that one day a woman can walk down the street without being judged by her looks. I have a dream that one day men would see the truth about their harmful behaviors and seek forgiveness, healing, and ultimate restoration. I have a dream that corporations would value people over profit, and not contribute to sexual exploitation. I have a dream that one day, boys and girls can walk hand in hand, treating each other with mutual respect and admiration. I have a dream that God’s people will be unified as One in justice, love and mercy. I have a dream God’s Beloved would join together in lifting people from the pit of destruction and into authentic, vibrant community. I have a dream...that the destructive world of trafficking would be eradicated because people value people. Yes, I have a dream...and that’s my why.

I know God’s faithfulness and I trust God’s invitation to me to help set captives free, in this time of history. I feel a fresh fire growing inside my soul drawing me closer to Christ and deepening my devotion.

I am thrilled that I get to be a part of the Rescue America team! I am eager to partner with individuals and churches to help eradicate trafficking in our day. It is exciting to expand the reach of Rescue America by starting up Rescue Denver, and I look forward to supporting and developing our existing volunteer network in Houston. What an exciting time!

I see God’s Light shining in the darkness, and I see His army of Light-bearers; armed with His power to shine love, joy, peace, kindness, and goodness into the dark places. I am so eager to mobilize volunteers to support the mission of Rescue America; to help bring restoration and healing in our land. We get to bring God’s Light; we get to bring God’s Love! Let’s go!
