The Gift of Giving Back - Emma’s 9th Birthday Wish

There are few things more inspiring than the next generation stepping up and giving back.  This was evident when our Communication Specialist sat down to chat with Emma Meier, an almost 9-year-old from Grand Island, Nebraska.

Emma turns nine on August 24th, and like most kids her age, she’s celebrating with a birthday party with all of her friends. However, while most kids dream of the presents they’ll receive from their friends on their special day, Emma chose to do something different this year.

Instead of asking for gifts, she asked that each of her friends bring a donation for Rescue America.

“I really like to give back, so I thought why don’t we do donations instead of presents this year because I don’t really need anything,” she said.

When Emma first found out about Rescue America through her aunt Allison, she wanted to know more. “My mom and aunt were talking about it, and I asked a lot of questions. We talked a little deeper, I got to know about it and I just wanted to help,” she said.

Now, Emma is thrilled with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those in need, and not only will she be impacting the lives of survivors, she’s inspiring her friends and all who hear her story on the joy of giving back.

“It’s super fun, and I know you don’t get anything, but in your heart you do get something,” she said.

Emma exemplifies how anyone, no matter their age, can be a helping hand to those who need it. She is a difference maker, and she knows others can be too. “It feels great that I can do this and so can other people; I just love having opportunities like this,” she said.

By the light in her eyes and the big smile on her face, it was clear that this will be a birthday to remember.
